Fairness

1

What is Fairness?

Unit 7, Lesson 1, “What is Fairness?” introduces the spelling and definition of the word fairness. Students will learn examples of fairness, provided by the accompanying video. Additionally, students will practice the correct spelling of fairness, demonstrate comprehension through a pictorial demonstration, and practice conversation skills by sharing their illustrations with a partner.

The full collection of units introduces all nine of the prohuman character strengths: optimism, grit, gratitude, curiosity, courage, compassion, fairness, understanding, and humanity. Unit 7, Lesson 1, “What is Fairness?” introduces the spelling and definition of the word fairness. Students will learn examples of fairness, provided by the accompanying video. Additionally, students will practice the correct spelling of fairness, demonstrate comprehension through a pictorial demonstration, and practice conversation skills by sharing their illustrations with a partner. Write fairness on the board and prompt students to write it on their worksheets. Ask students what fairness means. Give students the definition of fairness: I treat everyone the same. If someone has been left out, I bring them in. Play the video: Sesame Street: Showing Fairness by Sesame Street (~2 min) Give an example of fairness (e.g., I showed fairness when I had two candies that two of my friends wanted. I gave them each one candy). Write three sentences on the board and ask students which one shows fairness: 1. I have three candies and my friends want some. I eat them all. 2. I have three candies and I share them with two friends so we each get one. 3. I have three candies and one friend wants them. I eat two and give my friend one. Set up five stuffed animals in front of the class and tell the students that we have ten cookies. If we are being fair, how many cookies should each animal get? Give half the class a cookie and ask if that is fair. Ask the students what would be fair, and give the rest of the class a cookie. Have the students draw a picture of a time they showed fairness, on their worksheets. Ask students to share their pictures with a classmate and discuss how they drew an example of fairness. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES Talk with your students about times that you have seen examples of people demonstrating fairness. You can give examples of family, friends, and/or historical or current public figures. Talk with your students about times in your life that you have demonstrated fairness, despite hardships.
