Unit 7, Lesson 2, “Learning Fairness from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word fairness. Students will learn an example of fairness from a classic work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling fairness, copy the definition of the word fairness, and create a pictorial representation of fairness that demonstrates reading comprehension.

SUGGESTED TIME:

20 minutes

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of fairness
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing pictures with classmates

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  • Fairness: I treat everyone the same. If someone has been left out, I bring them in.

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Write fairness on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell fairness on their worksheets.
  3. Ask students to copy the definition of fairness on their worksheets.
  4. Read the text The Little Red Hen by Pie Corbett and/or 
  5. Play the video: The Little Red Hen by Curious World (~5 min)
  6. Ask students how the hen in the story showed fairness.
  7. Ask students to draw a picture on their worksheets about how the hen in the story showed fairness. 
  8. Ask students to share their pictures with their classmates.
