Learning Understanding from Literature

Unit 8, Lesson 1, “Learning Understanding from Literature,” reinforces the vocabulary word understanding. Students will learn the examples of understanding by comparing a classic and contemporary work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will create their own sentences that demonstrate their comprehension of the word understanding. Finally, students will practice their reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates.

Stories can be told from different perspectives, which changes the story. Write on the board: Writing an Informative Text about Understanding Here is an example of an informative text about understanding: Topic: Understanding means that a person seeks knowledge and tries to learn the truth. I wanted to understand how many planets are in our solar system and what their names are, so I read a book about our solar system. Fact 1: There are eight planets in our solar system. Fact 2: The names of these planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Closure: I showed understanding by seeking knowledge about our solar system. Because I showed understanding, I now know all the planets and their names. Now each student will write their own informative text, on their worksheet, about how Gitanjali Rao showed understanding.
