Unit 9, Lesson 2, “Learning Humanity from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word humanity. Students will learn an example of humanity from a contemporary work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling humanity, copy the definition of the word humanity, and create a pictorial representation of humanity that demonstrates reading comprehension.

SUGGESTED TIME:

20 minutes

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of humanity
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing pictures with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Write humanity on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell humanity on their worksheets.
  3. Ask students to copy the definition of humanity on their worksheets.
  4. Read the book I Am Human: A Book of Empathy by Susan Verde and/or
  5. Play the video: Read aloud of I Am Human: A Book of Empathy by Read Aloud Kids Book Time (~2 min)
  6. Ask students how the story showed humanity.
  7. Ask students to draw a picture on their worksheets about how the story showed humanity.
  8. Ask students to share their pictures with their classmates.
