Unit 9, Lesson 1, “What is Humanity?” introduces the spelling and definition of the word humanity. Students will learn examples of humanity, provided by the accompanying video. Additionally, students will practice the correct spelling of humanity, write a sentence about how they have shown humanity, demonstrate comprehension through a pictorial demonstration, and practice conversation skills by sharing their sentences and illustrations with a partner.

LESSON PROCEDURE

Today we will talk about humanity. 

  1. Write humanity on the board and prompt students to write it on their worksheets.
  2. Play the video: Let’s Show Our Humanity: A Poem for Kids by The Creative Kids Corner (~1 min) 
  3. Play the video: Heart Touching Video of Humanity by Ranjith RobinHood (~1 min)
  4. Give an example of humanity (e.g., I see that all people throughout the world are special and important.) 
  5. Write three sentences on the board and ask students which one shows humanity:
    1. I do not think that people are special.
    2. People have too many differences to share anything in common.
    3. We all can work together to make our lives better.
  6. Explain to students that even though different people look different, we all belong to one race: the human race. Have students color the picture on their worksheets.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Talk with your students about times that you have seen examples of people demonstrating humanity. You can give examples of family, friends, and/or historical or current public figures.
  • Talk with your students about times in your life that you have demonstrated humanity despite hardships.
