Unit 8, Lesson 3, “Learning Understanding from a Nonfiction Text,” reinforces the vocabulary word understanding. Students will learn examples of understanding from a nonfiction text by listening to a read aloud. Also, students will develop their reading skills by reading the text aloud to a partner. Finally, students will practice their writing skills by copying a sentence about understanding.

SUGGESTED TIME:

20 minutes

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of understanding
  • Correctly copy a sentence about understanding
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking 
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Write understanding on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell understanding on their worksheets.
  3. Read the nonfiction text on the worksheet.
  4. Ask students what is the main topic of the text.
  5. Ask students what are the key details of the text.
  6. Ask students what is the relationship between understanding, school, stories, home, family, listening, and point of view.
  7. Have students take turns reading the nonfiction text to a partner. 
  8. Have students copy the sentence on the worksheet.

Understanding means I seek knowledge and try to learn the truth. I think about other people’s views that might be different from mine.

I can show understanding at school. When I read stories, I can try to understand each person’s different point of view.

I can show understanding at home by listening to my family members to hear their point of view, which might be different from mine. For example, I might think that someone is mad, but they might tell me they are just tired.
