Unit 6, Lesson 2, “Learning Compassion from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word compassion. Students will learn an example of compassion from a classic work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling compassion, copy the definition of the word compassion, and create a pictorial representation of compassion that demonstrates reading comprehension.

SUGGESTED TIME:

20 minutes

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of compassion
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing pictures with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Write compassion on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell compassion on their worksheets.
  3. Ask students to copy the definition of compassion on their worksheet.
  4. Read the text Aesop’s Fable The Lion and the Mouse” or 
  5. Play the video: The Lion and the Mouse by ABCMouse.com Early Learning Academy (~2 min)
  6. Ask students how the mouse in the story showed compassion.
  7. Ask students to draw a picture on their worksheets about how the mouse in the story showed compassion. 
  8. Ask students to share their pictures with their classmates.
