Unit 5, Lesson 3, “Learning Courage from a Nonfiction Text,” reinforces the vocabulary word courage. Students will learn examples of courage from a nonfiction text by listening to a read aloud. Also, students will develop their reading skills by reading the text aloud to a partner. Finally, students will practice their writing skills by copying a sentence about courage.

20 minutes

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of courage
  • Correctly copy a sentence about courage
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking 
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Write courage on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell courage on their worksheets.
  3. Read the nonfiction text on the worksheet.
  4. Ask students what is the main topic of the text.
  5. Ask students what are the key details of the text.
  6. Ask students what is the relationship between courage, doctor, school, and playground in the text. 
  7. Have students take turns reading the nonfiction text to a partner. 
  8. Have students copy the sentence on the worksheet.

Courage means that I do what I think is right even when I am afraid.

I can have courage when I go to the doctor’s office. I might be afraid, but I have courage and know that the doctor will not hurt me.

I can have courage when I go to school. At times, it might be hard to learn some things. I can have courage to face hard things so that I can learn.

I can have courage on the playground. Sometimes, it is hard to make new friends. I can have courage to talk to the other kids and play nicely with them.
