Unit 5, Lesson 1, “What is Courage?” introduces the spelling and definition of the word courage. Students will learn examples of courage, provided by the accompanying video. Additionally, students will practice the correct spelling of courage, demonstrate comprehension through a pictorial demonstration, and practice conversation skills by sharing their illustrations with a partner.

LESSON PROCEDURE

Today we will talk about courage. 

  1. Write courage on the board.
  2. Ask the students: What is courage?
  3. Play the video Kids Talk About Bravery and Courage by PBS Kids (~9 min)
  4. Give an example of courage (e.g., I had courage when I went to the doctor even though I was afraid.)
  5. Write three sentences on the board and ask students which one shows courage:
    a. I am afraid to go to the doctor.
    b. I get scared in my basement, so I don’t go down there.
    c. I am afraid of going to the dentist, but I went and listened to the dentist.
  6. Ask the students to write courage on their worksheets.
  7. Ask the students: What is a superhero?
  8. Ask the students: What are some different types of powers that superheroes might have?
  9. Ask the students: If you were a superhero with courage, what would you do? Circle the room to support the students in sounding out and correctly spelling their words.
  10. Have students color the picture on their worksheets.
  11. Have students share their pictures with a partner.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Talk with your students about times you have seen examples of people demonstrating courage. You can give examples of family, friends, and/or historical or current public figures.
  • Talk with your students about times when you have demonstrated courage, despite hardships.
