Unit 4, Lesson 2, “Learning Curiosity from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word curiosity. Students will learn an example of curiosity from a classic work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling curiosity, copy the definition of the word curiosity, and create a pictorial representation of curiosity that demonstrates reading comprehension.

SUGGESTED TIME:
20 minutes
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
- Spell, define, and give an example of curiosity
- Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking
- Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing pictures with classmates
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
- Small necked jar or vase (a glass maple syrup jar will work well)
- Stones (glass is pretty, but pea gravel will work just as well)
- Sponge & drying cloth (cleanup)
- Pitcher and funnel (optional)
- Tray (preferably with high sides)
- Text: Aesop’s Fable “The Crow and the Pitcher” or
- Video: Read aloud of The Crow and the Pitcher by Anon Animation Rhymes for Kids (~3 min)

LESSON PROCEDURE
- Read The Crow and the Pitcher (text) or play the video read aloud (~3 min).
- Ask students how the crow in the story showed curiosity.
- Tell the students that we will do the experiment as the crow did to see how the stones can raise the water. Follow the protocol on this website: The Crow and the Pitcher: Science and Literature Lesson by Child of the Redwoods
- Ask students to spell curiosity on their worksheets.
- Ask students to copy the definition of curiosity on their worksheets. Ask students to draw a picture on their worksheets that shows how the crow in the story showed curiosity.
- Ask students to share their pictures with their classmates.
