Unit 3, Lesson 2, “Learning Gratitude from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word gratitude. Students will learn an example of gratitude from a contemporary work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling gratitude, copy the definition of the word gratitude, and create a pictorial representation of gratitude that demonstrates reading comprehension.

20 minutes

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Spell, define, and give an example of gratitude
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking
  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing pictures with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

Today we will talk more about gratitude.

  1. Write gratitude on the board.
  2. Ask students to spell gratitude on their worksheet.
  3. Ask students to copy the definition of gratitude on their worksheet.
  4. Read Gratitude is My Superpower (text) or play the video read aloud (~6 min).
  5. Ask students how the Betsy in the story showed gratitude.
  6. Ask students to draw a picture on their worksheets that shows how Betsy in the story showed gratitude. 
  7. Ask students to share their pictures with a classmate and discuss how they drew an example of gratitude.
