Unit 2, Lesson 2, “Learning Grit from Literature” reinforces the vocabulary word grit. Students will learn an example of grit from a classic work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will practice spelling grit and copy the definition of the word grit.

SUGGESTED TIME:

20 minutes

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Listen to a read aloud to reinforce understanding of English sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
  • Correctly write the word and definition of grit
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard English sentence structure and grammar in writing and speaking 
  • Practice conversation skills by discussing a story with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

Today we will learn about grit. 

  1. Write grit on the board. 
  2. Read Aesop’s Fable: The Tortoise and the Hare (text) and/or
  3. Play the video The Tortoise and the Hare (~4 min)
  4. Have a class discussion about how the tortoise in the story showed grit.
  5. Ask students to complete their worksheets.
