In Unit 9, Lesson 1, “Learning Humanity from Literature,” students will learn examples of humanity from a contemporary work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will create their own sentences that demonstrate their comprehension of the word humanity. Finally, students will practice their reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates.

LESSON PROCEDURE

  1. Ask students what humanity means.
  2. Give them the definition:  I see that every person is special. People are more alike than unalike. We all need to work together to make our lives better.
  3. Today we are going to learn about an important American who demonstrated humanity.
  4. Play the video: The incredible escape that turned a slave into an American hero by BBC Global (~5 min)
  5. Read the book The Escape of Robert Smalls: A Daring Voyage Out of Slavery by Jehan Jones-Radgowski or
  6. Play the video: Read aloud of The Escape of Robert Smalls by Torrington Library (~20 min) 
  7. Have students complete the questions on their worksheets. 
  8. Have students read their sentences to a partner.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER AFTER READING The Escape of Robert Smalls: A Daring Voyage Out of Slavery by Jehan Jones-Radgowski:

  1. What was happening in America at the time this story took place?

  1. How is slavery a denial of people’s humanity? 

  1. What did Robert Smalls plan to do, and why was it a big risk? 

  1. What would Robert and the rest of the enslaved crewmen gain if they succeeded?

  1. How did Robert respect the humanity of himself, his family,  the enslaved crewmen, and the runaway slaves?

  1. What do you think is this story’s main message about humanity?
