Learning Courage from Literature
Unit 5, Lesson 1, “Learning Courage from Literature,” reinforces the vocabulary word courage. Students will learn the definition of courage and examples from a contemporary work of children’s literature. Additionally, students will create sentences that demonstrate their comprehension of the word courage. Finally, students will practice reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates.
Fiction

Activity: Ask students to go around the room and say one way they can show courage on the playground. Take students out to the playground and have them show courage. Ask students to complete their worksheets. Ask students to read their sentences to a partner. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES - SUGGESTIONS Talk with your students about times that you have seen examples of people demonstrating courage. You could give examples of family, friends, and/or historical or current public figures. Talk with your students about times in your life that you have demonstrated courage, despite hardships. For example, I was afraid of going to the dentist, so I needed to show courage. Fact 1: I learned that the dentist is very nice and will not hurt me. Fact 2: I learned that the dentist has special tools to take care of my teeth. Closure: Even though I felt afraid of going to the dentist, I showed courage and went to the dentist and it went very well. My teeth are now clean and he even gave me a sticker! Now each student will write their own informative text, on their worksheet, about how Malala Yousafzai showed courage. NOTE: Collect and keep the worksheet on the following page for the next day’s lesson in which students will share their informative texts with a partner.
